HASA #4 Event

Posted on by forrest_troxell |

I just surfed in the fourth stop of the HASA series on maui and placed 1st in Juniors and 4th in Open Men.  I am totally stoked on my result and can’t wait for the next HASA in Lahaina, the last event on Maui before state championships.  I hope to place well again.  State championships start in early June.

My life update!

Posted on by forrest_troxell |

Yo yo!!  What’s up everyone.  Just wanted to update the world on what’s going on in my life.  Spring Break! I’ve been off for a week and now finishing my second week off.  The surf has been very consistent the whole time.  It’s getting small though so it’s a good time to focus on homework due.  I’m a senior at Hana High so I gotta knuckle down and graduate with a high GPA.  Did some shooting with Quincy Dein over the break, but not too sure how the shots came out.  Anyway, that’s about it.  Life is good…aloha!

Looking, scanning, searching the horizon for what might be that approaching set.  A lump in the ocean moving quickly towards the land and I know what is in store.  I turn around and paddle, lining myself up 2 feet on the shoulder of the dry rock that creates the boil.  The wave slams the rock and I stand up, air dropping into what seems like death, all I can see is reef beneath me.  Land in the flats, and somehow hook my bottom turn and angle into the pocket of the hollow wave.  I see Quincy sitting on the shoulder, just outside of the barrel’s mouth pointing that bright yellow water housing directly at my face. I tuck under the lip and draw my line through a beautiful emerald green and electric blue tube.  Flying past Quincy, the lip closes tightly and I hold my chest as closely as I can towards my knees.  I push my head through the chandelier of the barrel, knowing this situation can go both ways - close out or a beautiful exit.  Before I know it the sun shines and the shoulder of the wave welcomes me as I make it through another amazing barrel at this secret surf spot.

Congrats Seshn

Flat and rainy.

Posted on by forrest_troxell |

Ahh! It’s the coldest I have ever felt Hawaii, it’s rainy, and the ocean shows no sign of swell here in Hana.  2 days ago it was bombing, like shutting down everywhere, and then the next day it’s absolutely flat.  It was the craziest thing I have ever seen.  Oh well, pray for surf!

Welcome to my Seshn Site!

Wave Search…

Posted on by forrest_troxell |

One of the largest swells to hit the southside of Maui in a year occured on Thursday, the 10th, 2008.  It was a large Northwest swell with a lot of west wrapping into the southern side of Kihei, Maui.  I knew the swell was going to be big so I drove out Wednesday night to spend the night at my friend, Quincy’s house (yes, Quincy Dein, the man behind the lens of most of my photos.) Woke up the next morning, in front of his house was bombing close outs and we knew it was going to be good.  We checked the local secret spot, but it had around 5 guys already out there, too many for us.  So we decided to drive up north, towards Honolua Bay.  We scored a really fun break up there (too territorial to name) and got some insane photos.  Then we checked Honolua.  Too inconsistent and packed house!  Surfed Ironwoods for a little while Quincy used the water housing, but didn’t get any good shots.  So we drove all the way back to the southside and checked the same secret spot as the one in the morning.  We ended up paddling out and surfing till it was pitch black.  It was insane.  The wave comes in from extremely deep water, hits a boiling shelf of reef, and jacks up and shacks down the line, then shoulders off for good cutback and carve sections, and then one last vertical turn section before dry reef.  It was an epic day.  We woke up the next day and checked two spots before ending up at the same exact spot as the night before.  We surfed from 7 till 12 and got amazing water shots, barrels and carves.  The shots will be posted soon, just wait!

Aloha,
Forrest

Back in the water!

Posted on by forrest_troxell |

After what seemed for weeks, I am back in the water after my recent head injury I obtained a few tuesdays ago. Already had about three surf seshns and the whole feeling of surfing is coming back to me.  Only being out of the water for one week exactly, it felt as if I had missed weeks of surfing.  Not only am I back in the ocean, but the surf is starting to pick up and the winds/conditions are making it picture perfect here.  I am so stoked, and will be letting you know of some epic seshns as they happen.

Shoots!!
